Any suggestions?
When I turn on the power it fires up normally, but then
gets to where the screen says "checking pool data" and
never goes any further. I don't know enough about the
internal parts to know if something is not connected
correctly. Are there any web sites or magazines that have
really simple diagrams for me to compare?
Thanks :)

The problem is not a connection you can see, it is a file
corruption problem on the hard drive.
Suggest that you use your XP CD to run sfc /scannow or do a
repair install. You will have to reinstall all the XP
updates afterward.

Is this the message at the very beginning about the DMI Pool or is it a
Windows error message on a blue screen?

If it's that early message, you've got a hardware problem. Most likely would
be the hard drive, IDE cable, or some other drive. It could also be memory.
Or a variety of other things.

Without the ability to see the computer and test some parts, there's just no
way to tell.

If it;s the later Windows message, you could try doing a repair install.

Or, post the *exact* message you're seeing and when it shows up.

Is this a new build PC

If so are you using SATA disk

If you have one only disk, then make sure BIOS settings have STA in BASE mode NOT in RAID mode

If you give more details on your hardware configuration, I may be able to give specific response that will pinpoint oyur trouble

Basically though it is a disk related issue on the PC.
