CPU spike running Mediaplayer

Media Player 10 crackles when any other app is running (especially upon
launch). There are no hardware conflicts. The issue occurred after burning
some CDs to the hard drive and obtaining media information/cover art. Prior
to this particular day about 3 weeks ago, there had been no issues running
any other app. Here are the actions thus far: rolled back to Media Player 9,
reinstall v. 10, registry clean, rolled back to prior date, attempted another
media app (RA Player), tested Microsoft sounds (happens with all sound
files), updated drivers, logged in as another user, new speakers, same issues
persist with the CD player, checked the processes and killed off everything
except the system files, it seemed that one file in particular MTR.exe (or
MRT.exe) was a potential issue but the issue persisted (not as badly)...no
viruses, no hardware conflicts. I have not updated any drivers as I do not
think this is the issue since the onset was so sudden. Any thoughts and
suggestions would be very welcomed. Thank you!

You listed youre own problem. One cannot just "rollback" to WMP 9,the
only way to go back to 9 from 10 is thru system restore.Try downloading
another copy of 10

What Antivirus software are you running?
Norton and Computer Associates usually spike the CPU readings.

I am running AVG. It had not been an issue in the past but I will disable it
and see if this has an impact. Thanks!

I restored the system to 3 days prior to the issue starting and the issue
continued. Running Media Player 9 did not fix this either. I checked my
start up folder to see what was running and all I found was HotSync - nothing
different there. Thanks for the suggestion.
