Mr. Mustang

With the price drop, I am looking at the 64 Ath 4000 and the 4600 X2.
Compaing the two on Tom's Hardware.com CPU comparing charts, the Ath 4000 is
far superior to any X2 (exception 4800 and FX 60).

Thoughts?

Cycles beat out multi-processors. its only when the effort is divided
between the processors do the X2s get faster. For single-threaded
applications (and most games), a fast single core may be better than an
equally priced multi running at a slower clock.

That was my conclusion as well. I am a hardcore gamer and I do not do a
whole lot of multitasking.

150 bucks for the 64 Ath 4000 is a steal.

I paid $140 for a 3800 a couple of months ago before I was aware of the
price cuts.

Where have you seen this processor for 150 bucks? I'd jump on one for that
price. Newegg is still asking 250 bucks for one.

Tiger Direct. I just ordered mine!

A single core clocked higher than a duall core will outperform the dual
core in a single task. Start doing several things at once and the dual
core will start lapping the single core. So if you only run 1 single
threaded app at a time, a dual core won't do you any good. But try running
that app and then compiling a kernel in the background.:-)

I just purchased an Athlon 64 4000+ for $139 at Newegg. This past week they
had dropped to $225 but this evening they dropped to $139 so I had to jump
on one.

I got the 4000+ as well for $133+ shipping. I looked a gaming benchmarks and
the 4000+ w/1MB L2 walks all over the X2 3800 and X2 4200. For $133.oo it's
a no brainer.

Mwave briefly had it for a whopping 5 bucks cheaper last week before
it sold out. After deciding that I wouldn't soon have any games or
apps that made adequate use of an X2, I decided to go for the 4000+. I
upgraded from my XP 64 3000+ on Monday. Very nice with GTR Racing and
Call of Duty 2 in which I finally got past a point I had been stuck at
for a while -- coincidence?

Cool.I bought my 4000+ at Mwave. That and my new vid card should be a nice
upgrade from S754 2800+ and Geforce 5900.
I haven't gotten the vid card yet.I need to wait for the best possible
deal.I'm hoping for a 7800GT.
