CPU or Video? No POST!

My daughter runs a below 1Khz IBM clone and all of a sudden she gets no POST
and no video output. She runs Windows 95.

I stopped by her house and opened the chassis and all connections are good.
Power is there and the fans run. I unplugged all connections and re-inserted
them, including Memory strip.
It made no difference. No signal at the monitor.

It is not the monitor, since I took the computer home and it gives no video
output on my monitor either.

I could not check the graphics card, since I did not have another that would
fit that slot. But now my question is - can it be the CPU if all other
things work, like power, CDROM in and out, fans etc.

If you aren't getting any beeps from the system, then since this has
happened to me recently on two different machines, I would suspect the
motherboard. But can't say that for absolute sure in your case.

This morning I have been testing my 2 x 256Mb memory sticks to see which one
is faulty. When I put the faulty one in on its own, I get exactly as you
describe - blank screen, no beeps, no POST, but fans whirring away.

I believe that may be it or the CPU.

I checked the graphics card, ok. The memory OK,the HD ok.

Leaves about the above. Oh, also checked the monitor OK also.

It is an EPOX VIA KT266, DDR, MB and Duron 1 GHZ AMd. Only 1 1/2 years old.

Only 1 1/2 years old.

So was mine. It happens for many reasons, not just age (such as power
fluctuations, static build-up, etc).

Anyway, my processor was fine after buying a new motherboard and trying it
out in it. If you can just whip out the processor (its quite easy - just
lift off the heatsink and fan off the top and pull the arm up) then test it
in a compatible system. But my guess is still the motherboard.

Try another video card and if still the same then try different memory sticks.
