I just found an Athlon 2600+ that I forgot was in my attic, so I thaught I might as well sell it on ebay.

Last time I remember it was working absolutely fine, but I've noticed some small scratches on the centre silvery bit (that I have circled on the example below) - that's called the 'die' right? Anyway, does anybody know if its likely to have damaged it in any way? Some of the scratches are a little deep, and I have no way of testing it right now.

Thanks in advance

the die is very delicate if its cracked then it could be buggered, the only way to know is to test it

I managed to dig out the nForce2 motherboard and gave it a try. It got through a 3DMark05 benchmark without error, so it should be okay.

I'm assuming by the nature of the die that if it were damaged, it would either work, or not work. So if it managed to load Windows and run an intensive application, it should be good to go generally. Would that seem appropriate reasoning?

I hope so. Hell, these things are only going for £30 on Ebay now anyway! Seems ridiculous..

Aah yes, 'folding'. Well I'd love to be generous enough to donate that CPU, it's just I need the cash. Then again, that cash is going towards an A64 4000 - so I think I'll take part in some folding personally instead. I read you can get folding applications to kick in like a screen saver - which is a very cool concept.

Yep, you can just leave it running in the background - it would be great if you could take part and join us on the 'crunching' team :thumb:

I thinks I will then!

Just to check, does anybody know what the CPU die actually does? I mean, I know it helps to draw heat away from the CPU, but is it effectively just a heat sink, or is the processor IN or underneath that??
Apparently alot of AthlonXP chips have been found easy to, er, 'chip'. I'm interested to know if that's likely to have screwed up the bit that works out the numbers, or if it's just crippled the cooling capability a little...

?

I don't know about what exactly the die does - but I reckon the best way is to just try it and monitor the temps etc:thumb:

The 'dia' is the processor, (over 97million transisters) there is no HS untill you mount one ... so if you had 'cracked' it, it would have failed at the first hurdle.

;)
