To all:

Please help!! I have a newly built system with a clean
install of winxp pro. Once sevice pack 1a is installed my
task manager shows "system" process running at 100% with
220K MEM USAGE and now the system is sluggish. I remove
service pack 1a and the system goes back to normal. I re-
install service pack 1a from the web on windows
update...same issue. Makes no sense as all windows xp
machine..even similar Dell's (dimension 4600's) get
service pack 1a installed as soon as they are opened and
never have I seen this problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Any idea?

What are you installing XP from? An original Microsoft CD,
or a restore CD provided by a major PC manufacturer?

If it's the latter, that may be the problem. The restore
CDs are designed to be installed on the machine they were
purchased with. Now more than ever, those restore discs
are mastered to either not install on another machine
(Using hardware polling, etc.) or if you manage to get XP
installed, it also installs a host of incompatible drivers
and software.

If it's the former, make sure the CD is a genuine MS
product. I've seen firsthand how SP1 does NOT like being
installed on a "bootleg" copy of XP without
additional "cracking" of XP prior to installation of SP1.
(Which is all in violation of the license agreement
anyway...)

Also, check your motherboard manufacturer for possible
BIOS updates and of course check the Chipset manufacturer
as well. Via and Nvidia chipsets both need proprietary
chipset drivers to work 100% with XP. The XP installed
ones just don't seem to work properly.

Aside from that, we'd need full system specs to help you
out further.

Hope this helps

To add to the discussion:

The pc is newly built AMD/ASUS motherboard and cpu.

The motherboard has been updated to the latest BIOS

Once windows xp is installed under our original cd, the is
a corp lic. (we own 25 lic's) the system is up and running
fine. Before any additional items are added I take the
full xp sp1a network install, update...and the system is
running at 100% after the reboot. So to have some fun, I
update all windows updates from there...same stuff. So I
take sp1a off...and now my system is fine. Put sp1a on
from the web...same problem..back to 100% usage from
system.

So right now, I have an xp box without service pack 1 and
it is working fine, but I have 10 more of these to roll
out and trying to get one setup to then clone...We have
standards in house where our security guidelines state sp1
must be installed...GREAT!!!

Anyway..I have tried everything in the posts, from
stopping services to fresh re-installs...nothing helps...

Again, thanks to all who respond, but I still am out of
luck...anyone have anything to add?

When you install SP1 from the web, are you using the
Windows Update site which downloads and installs directly
from the web, or the Windows Catalog site where you can
download and archive the entire update and install it at
your leisure?

Maybe try whichever method you haven't done yet and see
what happens.

Maybe try the

Two things you can try:

Run DEFRAG to defrag all newly installed files. May need to do it more than
once. Possibly even in SAFE MODE.

Download BOOTVIS from M$ and run it and follow it's directions.

Two thoughts...

Have you checked the event viewer for anything odd or different then on the
other systems?

Have you tried removing/disabling all non-essential items and just running
with Vid card and one HD. Anything from onboard NICs/Sound to add-on cards
could be causing the issue.

FWIW,
Len
