CPU IDs

1) Can someone tell me when Intel first started putting CPU IDs inside
their chips (the kind of ID that software can read).

2) What about AMD Chips... do they have this feature also? If so,
when did AMD start doing this?

Do you mean unique identifiers? IOW, are you asking about an identifier
that distinguishes between all CPUs, not just amongst different makes
and models?

If so, the only chip that I know of is the Pentium III, but that
identifier may be turned off. There was a big sh*t storm about it when
the chip came out, so manufacturers were disuaded (at the time) to
include that information in their chip. I can't say if it's been snuck
back in now, but will look into it if this is what you mean.

If not, a CPUID is generally derived from an identifier embedded in the
BIOS. It's been that way for as long as I can remember, and is
independent of the the particular CPU.
