I don't even want to ask why the cardboard is there, but get it the hell
out of there and quick.

REMOVE THE CARDBOARD!!! You are preventing heat transfer from the CPU and
will burn it out.

yes

Do you smell burning cardboard when it's running? Remove it right away
regardless. You should also thoroughly clean the cpu and heatsink, I'm sure
there is residue left on them from the burning cardboard.

but it wasnt like it was a big chunk of cardboard, its was like a piece of
paper. i thought that you had to insolate the cpu from the heatsink right???

ok smarty pants

Squibbly,

Are you sure this "paper" is not a Thermal Pad? If so You don't need
Thermal grease, just the Thermal Pad.

Make Sure.

tell you the truth when i took it off, there was this white stuff on the
heatsink, but i had heat compound on it with it, you know that stuff that
comes out of a syringe thing

Squibbly,

Sounds like you did take off the cover for the Thermal Pad. If you have a
Thermal Pad in place already on the Heatsink, Thermal Grease is not
necessary.

Take Care,
