CPU Fan stops after booting

My PC is PIII 450 Mhz with 64MB RAM running Win 2K, I just
happened to open my box and noticed that the CPU fan runs
normally at startup but when the booting is complete it
stops. Is it normal?. I have not been able to run and CPU
intensive jobs as to find out when it restarts.

I seem to recall some of the earlier processors didn't run the fan if the
processor was cool enough. (This is definitely true for the PII 400MHz I
recently swapped out.) However, since you mentioned rebooting, I'll assume
the processor has heated sufficiently. You might be experiencing a
borderline fan failure. They do wear out over time. (And it ain't like the
PIII 450MHz is a new piece of hardware.) Replacements are cheap - in the $10
range. Just look for one with the same form factor and swap it out.

If the symptom persists, it could be just that the processor hasn't reached
fan activation temperature.

I would suspect the fan is dying also.....if you can remove the fan from the
heatsink, lift the small flap covering the fan bearings, apply 1 drop of
good 'ol 3in1 oil....should buy you enough time to obtain another cooling
unit before your processor fries...........

Avoid 3-in-1 oil or other petroleum distillate type oils. They will attack
plastic and other materials on your mother board. Use only an oil made for
electronic devices. Contact cleaner-lubricants are good for this purpose.
They are available at Radio Shack etc. Synthetic, plastic compatible
lubricants are also available at at hobby shops (R/C hobbyists and model
railroaders need them.) Look for "plastic compatible" on the label.

Read somewhere that if APM is seleceted in BIOS then the
cpu fan stops and starts depending on the temperature...is
it right?
 
Mine stops too. As soon as the w2k screen comes up. It's
not a bad fan. I go into the bios and it has the cpu temp
on there and it's way above the warning temp. The fan
will run and keep running as long as I'm in the bios
area. But as soon as windows comes up it stops. I used to
think that it would come back on when it needed too but I
think w2k is overriding some stuff.

Anybody know how to keep this from happening?
