CPU fan really necessary in Pentium (classic) 200 w/ heatsink?

I ran an old 133mhz Pentium for years w/ nothing. Then I upgraded it
to a 166 and under advice added a heat sink. Later I OC'd that to 200
and added a heat sink / fan.

Granted when the PC is used nowadays interactively (mostly as a
server) it might be more taxing given that it's running Win2K (as
opposed to say Win95) and maybe an occasional RTS game or something -
so maybe it gets taxed more than in the day - dunno.

But is it really necessary to run a fan or is a heat sink good enough
for an old P166 @ 200?

I had an old p2 400 and it only had a heatsink... no fan.

if the heat sink is good (aluminum or the like), it can get rid of the
heat by itself.

I wouldn't think you'd need one. I have an old P2 266 and it doesn't have a
fan and runs just fine.

yeah...i ran across one of those too
and it seemed to run pretty cool

however those P-1's usually had much smaller heat sinks
so usually need cooling fans above 120mhz or so
 
Lo, all the dell 166-233's I have seen had no cpu fan only a very large
copper heat sink. It was quite over sized and situated close to the
power supply so heat was drawn off the heat sink. Never had an over
heating problems. Still running one today. Extremely quite and reliable
machine.

yes, no, and maybe.

Use of a small 'sink with high load and poor chassis cooling, low
flow rate, may require a heatsink. Fitting the largest 'sink you
can find, having good flow rate, and optimally, a duct to
concentrate airflow at the socket, whether that be intake or
exhaust flow from the chassis, is not going to need a fan on the
heatsink. In-between those two extremes, it depends on how near
to one or the other extreme. With a fairly good 'sink, a lapped
heat-spreader, and properly applied thermal compound, omitting
the fan will work most of the time.

Try it and see.

But I'd use the fan.
