Hi,

I am currently building a P4 system for the first time, but have got stuck
..... power is going to the motherboard but the CPU fan is not starting?? I
have checked all connections etc ... without any joy. Any suggestions would
be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Paul,

Did you plug the CPU fan's power cord into the motherboard's CPU fan power
connector? If so, something such as a wire or other object could be
blocking the fan's rotors. When you say power is going to the mobo, are
other fans and lights turning on? You also may have forgotten to plug in
the large ATX power cord from the PSU, or the smaller 4-pin rectangular 12V
power cord. Is the correct local voltage setting for your PSU selected (110
or 220)?

Hope you get it up and running,
Russell

You may want to connect the fan to a power supply (bettery).
As long as it is more than 5V, the fan should turn on.
If it does not, you know that something is wrong with the fan
and you can get another one.

Is it the P4 retail fan?

Have you checked to see if there's voltage at the motherboard header for
the fan?

Yeah its the fan that came with the P4 chip ..

How can I check that??

Well, you said you had checked the connections! What did you do with
your multimeter after you checked them???

Unless you just checked to see that things were plugged in, which is
completely different and NOT what you wrote.

In that case, get a 3pin to 4pin adapter and plug the CPU fan directly
to one of the 4 pin molex IDE drive power plugs and see if it spins. If
not, the fan's a dud. If so, the motherboard fan header is burned out
and you should return the motherboard as it's defective.

Two things - VERY CAREFULLY give the fan a poke with the tip of something -
not your fingers though - to try and get it spinning when there is power
going to it. Don't electrocute yourself though or fry your components so be
careful. Don't chop your fingers off by sticking them into a powered up fan.

Secondly, what mobo is it - I had a similar problem with an Asus P4P800
Delulxe mobo - so did many others - which involved removing the CMOS
battery, clearing the CMOS and then it would work.

Always power off your PC, unplug it, let the power from the PSU discharge
before working on any components.

John.
