At boot up, system displays "CPU Fan Failure Service
Immediately" and then shuts down. I can press F2 and
then the system boots okay. Why is this happening? The
fan seems to be working just fine, I opened the box up to
look for the CPU Fan, no fan, just a big heatsink with a
funnel from the system fan down to it.

You have a hardware problem and this is a newsgroup for Windows XP. You
should contact the computer manufacturer and you should do so quickly.

Resolve the CPU Fan Failed error message as follows:

In the Advanced menu, use the up and down arrow keys to
navigate to Hardware Monitor, and press Enter.

I agree with Mr. Swift, in the meanwhile if you go to download.com and download
SiSoft Sandra, FREE, you can check on the temperature of your CPU
and motherboard. The manufacturer can tell you what the correct
temperature should be. :-)
