Noted that last few days my computer stops to work when loading some
applications.
When going to Windows Task Manager / Performance, I see CPU usage with 100%
and remaining like this.
What does it means in reference to slow or even non performance ?
Do I need more memory although I have 512.
Please comment / guide.

Sounds like a possible virus to me.

Occasionally I've seen this happen w/ Internet Explorer. Not sure why, but
one of the IE processes will start running 100%, perhaps an infinite loop in
some webpage's Javscript or something. Whatever the reason, I simply go to
the Task Manager, find the offending task, and kill it.

According to me it may be some spam which has possibly been installed to your
system via the Internet. Please remove any non-required softwares, blogs,
spams.

One more suggestion is that perform a Full-system scan with your antivirus
program. It may be a virus too!! (dont panic). Upgrade the virus definitions
of your antivirus before performing the scan.

I hope I helped you!!
Good-luck...

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete
Look on the Processes tab. What process is using the most CPU and how much
is it using?

What is the Image name using the CPU?

Which Applications?

Memory has nothing to do with the CPU!

I thank you all for interest and reply.

I run Symantec Internet Security every night regularly. So the idea of virus
should be at first, no considered, unless it is a virus unknown to Symantec.
Update is automatic.

The freezing appears for some time, not specifically timed, and disappears
the same way it came.

A loop should be the possible cause. How can I get rid of this, if I can do
it at all ??

Lately noted that it appears when I load Quicken 2001, using 96. Sometimes
System Idle Process with same use, 96.

Happy to know that CPU has Nothing with memory.

Tried get the most feed back for you all.

Most of times a simple reboot gets rid of it, but I only want to know why it
happens

My own experience to get rid of this persistent 100% cpu usage (which
happened for a few days without any apparent reason) is this:

Use Ad-Aware SE Personal (free), Spybot Search & Destroy (free) and
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (free) [try Google for the sites]
in addition to my paid anti-virus EZ Antivirus twoor three times a day -
after two or three days the 100% cpu usage disappeared for good. It seems
that somehow at certain times the various applications could not remove a
certain virus/worm/trojan or whatever it was that caused the slowdown. The
virus(etc) may not be removed the first time because of certain
configurations of usage of the computer; but persistence and perseverance on
our part to run the tools for a few times a day will do the job. I say this
because after running Ms Malicious Software Removal Tool it said it found
the culprit (I think it was ...R/bot.gen) but could not remove it; after a
few tries it said found culprit and removed it.

Hope this helps.

Norton Anti Virus is the anti-virus programme, Norton Internet Security
is a software firewall. However, neither programmes deal with spyware.

Another possibility is spyware activity.
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

System Idle is the difference between the sum of all running processes
and 100%. If you are seeing a System Idle figure of 96% it means only 4%
of the CPU capacity is being used.

The 2005 and 2006 versions of Norton Antivirus *DO* have antispyware
incorporated.

Bobby

Yes it would appear I was not correct but neither is your statement!

Norton AntiVirus 2006
http://snipurl.com/jky7

No mention of antispyware.

Norton Internet Security 2006
http://snipurl.com/jkyb

Mentions antispyware as new feature?

Norton Internet Security 2005
http://snipurl.com/jkys
http://snipurl.com/jkyw
Mentions antispyware as new feature

I haven't checked whether this is typical but Norton Internet Security
2005 doesn't get a good review here:

My statement still stands...both 2005 and 2006 have antispyware, and it is
*part* of Norton Anti-Virus. It may not be on the web page, but it *is* on
the box, on the back and on one of the side panels.

The review means nothing. I can post reviews that rate it better than any
others. It merely comes down to how the tests/comparisons were made.

I can tell you this...any computer that I service that has NIS/NAV installed
and kept updated, has never had an infection. Many, if not most, of the
computers that I service that use other security programs *are* infected.
This is real world, not some test posted on a web page or in a magazine that
may depend upon one or another solution for advertising dollars. I have
witnessed for years the superiority of NAV/NIS over anything else.

Open Task Manager and go to the Processes tab.
Click twice on the CPU column header. That will sort the list in
descending order based on CPU usage, so the processes using the most
CPU time will be at the top. Make note of the names of the first 4
or 5 processes and post that information back here. That will help
us to identify just exactly what is using the CPU.

Good luck

It's not the quality of protection that attracts criticism. It's the
drag on system performance. The difficulty of uninstalling. The search
engine on the Knowledge Base is abysmal. I use Norton Anti-Virus and
Norton Internet Security so I have some experience of these products,
albeit not the latest versions.

Coming back to this matter, as I can guess reason of temporary freezing at
100 % CPU use.

There is an application which I deem very good, but at the same time very "
heavy ", which is taking a bunch of memory.

I am referring to Spy Doctor.

They are, under my point of view, fantastic, with daily updates,
demonstrating their work and interest with user clients.

However, much of freezing times is due to some of its operations in
background, which I was able to detect in tab Processes / CPU.

Generally, when such application is loaded and computer freezes by 100 %
CPU, they are in the top.

May be I am mistaken and there is only a coincidence. May be not.

That's all for time being.

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
