When I log onto my account I have hit Ctrl,Alt,Delete and
that brings up the Windows Task Manager. Down at the
botton it says CPU 100% Usage. I look at all the tasks on
the window and I see that the task CISVC.EXE is at 98 or
99% with the Task Manager under my account shows 2% or
0%. Why is this??? Many times I would click on the
Internet Explorer Icon to get to the internet and it
would take a very long time. Can someone tell me why this
is hapening and wher I can find more information on using
the Task Manager. On another Pc I used Iit had Windows 98
and when I hit Ctrl<Alt Delete it would being up a couple
applications I new were running. As I said earlier there
are many applications running that I don'T know about
that show up on the Task manager using Windows XP Home
edition On my Dell Dimension 4550. Again please Help.

cisvc.exe is the indexing service

If you dont want fast file searching, you could turn it off

start/run
services.msc

Double click on it and change its startup type to disabled, and then stop
it.

However you can tune it so it doesn't hog the cpu.

control panel/administrative tools/computer management

Click the + sign next to Services and Applications

Right click on Indexing Service and select All Tasks/Tune Performance

Select Customise and then click the customise button, and move the sliders
to the left.

I suppose it may be a virus masquerading as a legit file. Do you scan
regularly ?

Open "Computer Management", expand the "Services and Applications",
right-click on "Indexing Service", select "All Tasks -> Tune Performance".
You can decide how busy the Indexing Service should be -- the default is
equivalent to a 2-year old child. I set mine to a setting just above dead
and it seems to work in the background, keeping CPU hogging near zero.

Windows Task Manager shows task names and a few (very few) details.
What you need is Process Explorer (free) from
http://www.sysinternals.com

With PE, you can highlight a task or process like cisvc, and see what
modules and services are running under it. Under the Properties tab,
you can find out version information (WHO wrote it?), performance
statistics, and lots more.

This gem runs directly from its directory, no install needed. Just
download it, put it somewhere, and run it.
