How do you convert dynamic disk back to basic disk on the primary partition
while keeping all data and OS in tact?

Back up everything elsewhere, convert it back to basic, restore everything.

You would have to image the drive (Acronis True Image, Symantec Ghost etc)
to an external device then convert the drive to a basic disk and then image
the drive back again. Going from dynamic to basic is a destructive process.

Does anyone else think this solution is absurd? I upgraded a system to Vista
Home Premium and now have a drive with valuable data on it that i cannot
read...odd, even LINUX can read it, but Microsofts OS can't?? It won't,
right? Why?? Must be money...

Is there any REASONABLE soultion to this issue? I ahve a single windows
system that is now 'upgraded' to Vista Home Premium. There is drive in the
bay that is dynamic. I just want to get the data off of it...How can I?

Use a Live CD version of Linux and use it to transfer the data onto a
CD/DVD.....or pendrive if you have one big enough.
(A Live version of Linux is one that boots and runs off the CD and doesn't
install anything to your HDD. Examples are Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS....)

Absurd or no the conversion to a basic disk from a dynamic disk is a
destructive process, see :-
