The program I use to grab images from avis/mpg is Video2Photo
http://www.pixelchain.com/video2photo/

Caveat: Technically not freeware. An unregistered program will do the
grabs, but superimposes text on the image. To unlock it, the author
asks that if you find the program useful, you send him an email and let
him know if its useful to you. He doesnt sell your email addie, AFAICT
he just wants to know if people are using the program.

Both Virtualdub and Irfanview can extract bitmaps from AVI. Irfanview can
batch convert to JPEG.

Virtualdub video editor should do it. Download it from here
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/
Installation is unzipping the files into a directory and running it.
Individual frames can be captured from the video menu.

Playback the avi and screen capture it and save it to jpeg.

You cannot screen capture an AVI movie. Try it, you will have
interesting results. Sometimes it turns out black, sometimes it is
transparent and shows through to whatever window is underneath.

yeah you can. I used video2photo and it worked fine.

Yes, of course you can with a third party program... But not with just
the Print Screen button ;)
