Monica

I'm attempting to set up a document to use as an essay.
It requires a between a certain # of words. I cannot
locate a tool within the program that counts the # of
words in my essay. Is there one? And if so, how do I go
about using it? Thank you....

Go to File \ Properties \ Statistics - that lists
everything you need. :o)

Sorry, I should have said while in your document, go to
File, Properties, Statistics...

Note, however, that if you're counting words in a school assignment or
manuscript for publication, you don't *want* to count words in the header or
footer, and you would be unlikely to be using text boxes.

Hi Monica

As Suzanne and Kari have suggested, Tools > Word Count, or File > Properties > Statistics.

However, bear in mind that Word's word count doesn't count all the words.
If you have Word 2002 you can choose whether or not to
count footnotes. But Word won't count words in headers or footers or in
text boxes that you might use to create drawings or
diagrams.

Some academic friends of mine had the same problem, so I created a little
add-in for them that gets around some of these problems.
You can download it at
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/CompleteWordCount/index.html. It might be
useful for you.

Yes there is a way. Once the document is open and you
have typed in whatever you wish, highlight "tools" on the
command line, then highlight "word count". You will get a
dialogue box which gives you the following summary:

pages
words
characters (no spaces)
charcters (with spaces)
paragraphs
lines

You can also click on include footnotes and endnotes, for
a further count. You can also click on show toolbar and
refresh as you add content to the document.

Hope this helps...
