Hi can someone tell me what i need to do, i recently bought a secondhand Pc
which i found to have had a counterfeit copy of Windows XP on it. I have
recently purchased a genuine copy and i was wondering how i can put the
genuine copy on so i can have all the Win updates and support from Microsoft
without having to totally wipe off the counterfeit copy and start all over
again and insert the new pid number. Thanks Gaz61

In order to correct your issue, you need to perform
a "Repair Install" using your new, genuine Windows XP
Professional CD and Product Key.

The exact procedure that you need to follow will depend on the exact
edition and version of your conterfeit XP and of the genuine XP that
you purchased.

If the two are identical in terms of both edition (Home, Pro, Tablet,
Media Center) and version (Retail upgrade, retail full install, volume
license, OEM, etc) then you just change the Product Key to the legit
one using Magic Jelly Bean key finder:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

If the two are the same edition but different versions then you will
need to do a Repair Install as per
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If the two are different editions then you may have no choice but to
wipe out the installed XP and do a clean install of your new XP
*unless* your counterfeit XP is Home edition and your purchased XP is
Professional retail upgrade or retail full install version. In that
case you can just simply install the new Pro as an upgrade. Note that
OEM versions will not install as an upgrade.

Good luck
