I have a simple task, but can't for the life of me figure
out a simple answer! Im only a beginner at Excel and cant
see the solution to my problem which is, explained as
clearly as I can:

I've created a spreadsheet to be used for allocating
different reports to different people (all people listed
can be allocated any of the report types). One column
contains a list of names, another column a list of report
types (these columns are not adjacent). Both columns use
drop-down lists. I can calculate the total of ALL reports
assigned, regardless of type, but what I need to know is
how many reports of EACH specific type have been assigned
to each person. To keep track of people's workloads,
these totals also need to up-date each time a new report
is assigned. I've looked at IF and AND and DCOUNT etc.
but I'm still bamboozled ! Would appreciate any help
offered.

Look at Data=>Pivot Table report.

in the last dialog of the wizard, select layout (xl2000 and later).

row fields would would be name, report, no column field, put report in data
as well - default will be count

That should give you the summary you want.
