could the update be killing my computer?

On the 2nd of this month I installed a Windows update and
didn't catch what it was. Ever since I installed it, my
computer has been going crazy. The first signs of
something odd were when I would try to access my D drive.
Everything would lock up and then disappear. This message
keeps popping up saying "McShield.exe has generated errors
and will be shut down." (I'm guessing the update is
interfering with McAfee). Then came the blue screen of
doom. It got to the point where my computer wouldn't even
load passed the DOS screen....(I think that's what it's
called). When I try to run my computer in Safe Mode, it
blue screens me.
My D drive disappeared for a little while, I rebooted my
computer twice and it came back....now I have problems
accessing ANY files on my computer.
I thought maybe it was a virus or something....I did
numerous virus scans and spyware scans...but once I tried
to scan my D drive, I got nothing but problems. I can't
even defrag my D drive. Not to mention that my computer is
slower than a snail now.
All of this started AFTER I installed that update. I wish
I knew which one it was.
If anyone knows how I can check what updates came out on
the 2nd of this month, please tell me. I need to remove
whatever it was that got installed that day so I can
hopefully be able to access my D drive. I can't afford to
lose it because it has all my artwork that I have yet to
add to my cd portfolio.

Critical IE update KB867801
Shown in add/remove under IE
Welcome to the problems caused by this update, I have uninstalled it but am
still getting problems, though I installed it on another win2k sys and it
appears ok

Ok, it appears to be something for Windows Media Player. I
just remembered that the update was sitting in the task
bar for a couple of days, the 2nd was the day that I
decided to install it. So, does anyone know of any Windows
Media updates that came out somewhere between the 28th of
last month to the 2nd of this month?
The first time I got this message, I couldn't catch it
because my computer wound up blue screening me. It
happened again and I caught it, it says:
Windows-Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file
\Device\Harddisk Volume 1\Program Files\Windows Media
Player. The data has been lost. This error may be caused
by a failure of your computer hardware or network
connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
I'm not having problems with IE itself, only if I try to
access files from my computer with it. Well, accessing
files from my computer, period, is a problem....which also
includes not being able to reach the Add/Remove Programs
file.

No Media player updates that I'm aware of;
try the following, after downloading and installing msconfig, an MS
application.
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html
start msconfig.exe
1.. Choose Selective Startup and remove the check before "Load startup
items"
2.. On the Service tab, check "Hide all the Microsoft services"
3.. Uncheck all the items left on that tab.
4.. Apply the change and reboot the system.
5.. Check if the problem still occurs.
If problem has gone selectively re-enable items in msconfig, its all a bit
longwinded as you have to constantly reboot, to try and isolate problem

Thanks for the info, it seems like it would really
help.....that's if I was even able to access anything on
my computer. It seems that the only thing I can access
right now is the internet, but now THAT'S starting to give
me problems. If I can get to msconfig I'll definitely try
this out. Thanks. ^_^

I found the exact update that was installed that day:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB867801)
So, I guess you were right. But when I try to search for
it on my computer, it says no file was found...and it's
not even in Add/Remove programs. I'm going to try that
msconfig thing now....wish me luck....

Yes, I know this.....but I don't want to get rid of
Internet explorer.....I have no way of getting it back. My
step-brother and step-dad won't tell me where the Windows
2000 disc is. They obviously think I don't know what I'm
doing and yet they think it's my responsibility since I'm
the one that "messed up" the computer.
I tried the msconfig thing, it worked.....for a little
while.
I wound up taking the D drvie out and giving it to my
fiance so he can back up the files on his computer. Ever
since I took it out, my computer seems to be working fine.
Did you ever wind up getting the problem fixed?

Uninstall this update does not get rid of IE, just the update.
Its actually listed as 'Internet Explorer Q867801'

Oh, ok. I wasn't aware of that. Either way, I lost my D
drive.....we tried hooking it up to my fiance's computer
and it did the same thing as it did on my computer.
Everything on it was lost and I blame the update.
Apparently the update wants to reinstall itself onto my
computer...which I've seen some people complaining about
here.
My brother, the "expert", says that it wasn't the update
that killed my D drive......if it wasn't then I'd say it
had some really bad timing. There's just so many factors
that point to the update being the problem; other people
are having problems with that update, my computer didn't
start acting up until I installed the update....those are
the two main factors....but he thinks I'm wrong.
Exactly what happened to your computer when you installed
the update?

The sys started behaving as though pwr saving option were on, eg start an
app it would'nt appear on the desktop for 15/20sec. Once the app appeared
there was often a delay before I was able to use it.
I'm talking with MS at the moment, just sent them 10mb of log/dump files
It appears that there may be some problem with compatibility and video
dll's. Graphics were fine prior to this update.
