Could Someone PLEASE Help

I have to say this new Mail program leaves a LOT to be desired ...

Background: I had three identities in OE on XP. Migrated them all to Vista
and Windows Mail a month or so ago. All was going fairly well then ...

I had a bunch of messages that I couldn't delete. Somebody said, "delete
the MS Store files and Window Mail will rebuild the DB. Did that. Seemed to
work.

My wife came home today and triedto fire up Mail. Something went very
wrong. Recovered files and a shattered UInbox. Basically, 2 of the 3
idenities mail messages were gone. Very bad news.

Tried to reattach the messages -- I found them in Local Folders (1). [There
are 3 such folders: Local Folders, Local Folders (1), and Local Folders
(2).] No luck. There was some message saying the files were used by some
other application or weren't present.

Figured I'd just rebuild DB as I did before and go from there.

Now, when I fire up Mail, I get:

Windows Mailcould not be started. The application was unable to open the
Windows Mail message store. Windows Mail was unableto locate its message DB.
Click Cancel to proceed, anymessages found will be available under Orphaned
Accounts.

I do that. (There was more about other DB paths, etc.)

Then we get:

Windows Mail could not be started. blah blah blah. Yourcomputer may be out
of memory or your disk is full.

Both are false.

Then we get:

Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL couldnotbe initialized

So I read stuff here about changing permissions -- removed RO on Windows
Mail folder, etc -- and removing EDB and LOG files,etc.

Did all that -- to no avail.

What do I need to do to recover all of this???????????????
 
I think identities does not exist in Windows Mail if I am not mistaken.
Also, was your Windows Mail moved to another partition/folder?
 
You need to relocate the entire message store and start blank. Go to Tools
| Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder to find the message store
location. Then move everything under that Windows Mail directory to another
directory, so that the Windows Mail directory is completely empty. Then
restart WinMail and it will open fresh with nothing in the database. You
can then add your accounts and if they work correctly then you can import
messages from the directory to which you moved the files back into WinMail
(see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm2wm ).

I know thereare no identities inWindows Mail. I was talking about the OE
setup and its migration to WM.

No mail was movedanywhere -- other than by WM.

I couldn't use the Tools --> Options --> etc. approach that you mentioned
since WM wouldn't even launch. I knew the location though and renamed
"Windows Mail" to "WMSAVE" and created a new (empty) "Windows Mail" folder
there. WM then launched successfully. I recreated my three accounts in the
new setup. I will try the importing soon.

I sure hope that someone from MS is monitoring this and realizes that this
is not at all pretty and takes action to fix things.

Windows Mail doesn't do well with renaming Windows created folders via Explorer. That more than likely was the root of an additional problem
Copy the files to a different location(e.g. folder on the desktop)
Rename the folder to it original name.
Follow Steve's earlier advice..
