As the subject says: someone told me I'd apply firmware updates to my
NEC1300 (4x +/- (R)W) in order to prevent it from possibly getting
damaged if I used certain media. It there any truth in this?

Thanks for your opinions.

Chris

The first generation drives would indeed damaged themselves if you use
later generation media than what they were expecting (in fact some media
still come with disclaimers on them warning you that if the disks are
unsuitable damage may occur).

I don't know about that specific drive, but an older model Pioneer drive
the A04 or A05 IIRC would actually burn the laser out if you inserted
some types of 4x media in them. That was simply inserting the media,
not even trying to read or write!

Pioneer did later patch this nasty "feature" in later firmware.

So I guess the answer is, yes there is a small but very real possiblity
of damage.
