I've just built a new puter, Athlon XP 2000, 256 ram
installed win2000, and am using a jetway USB modem

Everything worked fine for 2 days
But now if i've been on-line, and want to go back on again I can't until
I've re-installed the modem driver

If I try to go on-line without re-installing the driver, the puter just
re-boots itself

Anyone ever had experience of this or can suggest a cure

TIA

Grey Goose,

Looks like you are experiencing the rath of the internet early on. First, you need
to have a good AVP with up to date definitions, second, you need a firewall
(hardware of software), third you need a good dataminer program, and fourth but
not least, you need a good anti spyware program. Check out www.spychecker.com .
This site has many to choose from. An example of each that has a free component is
AVG antivirus (www.grisoft.com), Zone Alarm firewall, Ad-aware antimalware, and
SpyBot S&D antispyware. You can find them all at spychecker.com. They also have
full featured progarms that are well worth the money. You can learn the hard way
or the easy way.

As for your modem, call your ISP and have him walk you htru is the best for
learning. If you are using O.E., the best place to seek help is one of the
I.E./O.E. NG's like microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress . Just type
inetexplorer in the search window of the newsgroups. You may need to dlete and
resetup theone or more of the components for a dialup.

good computing,

well I've got all of those things and had them installed before I went
on-line, learned years ago when a virus killed 2 of my hard drives, but this
prob is different

Thanks anyway

The reboots are probably fatal errors associated with the modem drivers. Windows by default reboots on system failure. To see the
BSOD, if you haven't already done this, Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Advanced | Startup and Recovery | [uncheck]
Automatically Reboot. You will need 2 MB of virtual memory on the system root drive for this. This won't fix anything but will let
you see the error and not just reboot. Since you juct built the machine you may have put the most up to date drivers in but if you
haven't, check the vendors website.

I can suggest another newsgroup, it is great for do-it-your-selfers like
yourself.
microsoft.public.win2000.hardware
I have seen lots of good answers to problems there.

Thanks Folks, I think that I've got to the bottom of it.

It seems that Win 2000 doesn't like certain USB modems and guess what one
I've got (:-))))

New internal one ordered

Thanks again
