hey guys.
Windows XP home edition. Horrified to find my Windows folder contents have
large numbers of sub folders appearing in blue script and all each carrying
the sub folder spuninst.
Horrified why, precisely? This is perfectly normal.
Norton adtivirus scan reveals no viruses etc.
Well, no, it wouldn't; at least not in these folders.
Is it
something to do with windows automatic updating on the net??
Yes, these are the backup files created each time you install an
update, hotfix, or service pack from Windows Update.
If you're confident that you won't need to uninstall either the
service pack or any of the subsequent hotfixes, you can safely delete
those folders. You can then open the Control Panel's Add/Remove
Programs applet and select each of the pertinent removal choices, in
turn. You should get an error message stating that the removal files
are missing, and asking if you'd like to delete the menu option.
By design, WinXP automatically compresses files that do not get used
frequently, and, if you've left the default settings intact, displays
those files in blue.
If you wish to change this behavior, in Windows Explorer, click
Tools > Folder Options > View > Advanced settings: Show encrypted or
compressed NTFS files in color.
