Corrupted System

Windows XP SP2 with all recent updates.

My machine has been corrupted. System Restore no longer works so restoring
to a previous restore point is not an option.

I have desktop shortcuts to favorite web sites. When I click on the icons
now, the screen blinks, but the web site is not accessed.

A different issue... When I open Internet Explorer and open a web site,
parts of the page do not display, e.g. TV Guide listings page will display,
but the listings themselves do not. Another example, nothing displays on the
Windows Update page.

Do I need to do a system recovery? If yes, what are the steps to do that?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks. McAfee was corrupted and I was instructed by McAfee Support to run
an uninstall and reinstall which I did last weekend. All seemed OK at the
time. I'm not sure, but I suspect the McAfee uninstall may have corrupted my
system which reulted in my original issue, i.e. no Internet access and system
hung on shutdown. When these problems began and while I was still able, I
restored to a point after the uninstall when everything seemed OK. The
intent was to reinstall McAfee again and proceed from there. However, the
restore appears to have been incomplete which resulted in having no system
restore capability, no ability to undo a system restore, no McAfee and no way
to reinstall McAfee until I correct the error that prevents web sites from
displaying properly. Once able to do this, I will reinstall McAfee and scan
for viruses. I do have Internet access now, but some sites do not display
properly. For example, I can access Windows Update, but the screen is blank.
Can anyone help me resolve the symtoms I described? Thanks.

You shouldn't even be using McAfee and that could well be what corrupted
your system and prevents you from normal Internet access., and stay away
from Norton also, it's worse. You don't have to trust me. Do a search for
user reviews on either one of those. Amazon is a good place to look.

It's hard to get either of those out of your system entirely without
reformatting your hard drive.

Avast anti-virus is free and highly rated. For a good cheap Inrernet
security suite you might try Trend Micro PC-cillin. There are others. Get
McAfee off your system. I would uninstall it then saearch for any of its
leftover folders and delete those then search the registry and delete
everything with the word McAffee in it. Then cleanup the registry.

Can anyone actually help me with my original questions please? I would
really appreciate knowing how to correct my web page display issues. Thanks.
