corrupted system files

About 5 times within the past 3 months, I've been unable to boot. Error
message says, Registry cannot load file "Software" or its log or
alternate. I've had to use the recovery console to repair the system.
Why would this be happening so ofton? It's a pain.

I would have the hardware of the machine checked. This could be caused
by bad RAM or some problem with the HDD.
 
My XP with SP1 won't remember logon names and passwords,
and often won't accept selections, such as updating
choices offered on Web pages.

It also won't remember IE's View/ExplorerBar/Folders on
reopening the window where that choice is made, nor on any
other windows open after having made that selection for an
open window and invoking Tools/Folder Options/View/Apply
to All Folders.
