Corrupted or incomplete regsitry information

Inexplicably, I can no longer use my CD-RW or DVD drive. When I open up the device manager, there are exclamation points that let me know the problem. The only solution it lists in the troubleshooter is to unistall and reintall the drive. Unless I have to do that six time instead of the five I tried, it aint workin. I have downloaded every type of registry medic, healer, mechanic, cleaner, etc that I can find. I tried a system retore up to 2 weeks before the problem occured and nothing. Short of slicking my computer, is there any I can do?

I have a similar problem except the device manager doesnt list my CD DVD at all! It disappeard w/o any other apparent problems and attempts to locate the CD in the software has failed. My machine came with Millenium installed and I upgraded to XP home. Did you hear anything?? Is it possible that a Microsolft update caused the trouble? I tried deleting the updates but couldnt for some reason..................AL
