'corrupted images' when using CF card reader

Hi there,

I've pretty throughly read through the threads covering problems with the
Camera & Scanner Wizard, but couldn't find anything addressing this problem,
I apologize if this has already been address elsewhere.

I have a Canon A80 and can download pictures no problem from the camera
using the Canon software. But if I try to use my CF card reader (LaCie
8-in-1) the images are corrupted (bads of incorrect colour). As I said I've
tried all the 'Camera Wizard' fixes but still no luck. I am using XP home
with SP2.

Thanks in advance,

Does this occur only when Viewing the
images on the card or are they still
corrupted after they are downloaded to
your hard drive?

Just a guess... but I'm wondering if
someone touched the contacts on the
memory card and the fingerprints
transferred to the contacts in the reader...
maybe the reader is not making full
contact. I recently read about a similar
issue with rechargeable batteries...
If you touch the contacts and leave
fingerprints on them the charger may
not function correctly.

Sounds like your card reader is dirty or
defective. Maybe LaCie support could
help you: http://www.lacie.com/se/support/

Thanks for the response John.
The images are corrupted both as I view them and after I have downloaded.

I had exactly the same problem with another card reader (Sandisk 8-in-1). I
contacted Sandisk and did everything they suggested (some registry stuff) but
no dice. Eventually they raised a white flag and gave me a return
authorization. I tried the reader on a few other PCs though and it worked
fine on all of them. In the end gave the reader to my dad and got a new one
(different brand) hoping for the best. Unhappily I remain thwarted.
All that said I figure the problem is with my computer and not with the
reader. In fact my old Sandisk reader worked fine for a few months and then
up and stopped 'working'. This may have been around the time I updated to SP2
but can't be sure now.

Does any of this help?

Is the corruption you see now...*exactly*
the same thing you saw with the previous
card reader?

If you can successfully download and
view the images by connecting your
camera. I would suspect the issue is
not with your computer but with the card
reader.

I would try sliding the card in and out
of the reader a few times...to see if
it would make better contact.

Download some images by connecting
your camera to the computer and then
download the same images to a different
folder with the card reader and compare
them.

Hey again John,

Indeed the corruption is exactly the same as the corruption I saw with my
other card reader.

I did as you suggested, slid the card in and out to try to get a better
connection. No joy.
Also downloaded the same set of images to different folders, once directly
through the camera and once through the card reader. The images from the
camera look great. Those from the reader have the same 'corruption'. I even
made sure I used the same USB port.

Seems to me the logical answer
is that the card reader is the problem.
Have you tried all of your USB ports
with the same result?

I guess the last experiment I can think
of would be to try the card reader on
a different machine.
