I have a corrupted hard drive that is inaccessible within Windows XP. It
does show as a disk drive but Windows XP tells me its unformatted and wants
to format it. I can however, using demo versions of disk recovery tools, see
all the data on the drive. The demo versions will not allow me to recover
the data.
Is there any free disk utilities available that will allow me to recover
this data. Thanks

Have a look at Knoppix if you have a CD burner. This site gives
details on how to recover data with it;

Testdisk might be the thing you need

When I posted this four days ago in a German newsgroup, a poster
complained that he should have known earlier of that program, so that he
would have had less hassle, when he had to recover something with cat
and dd.

It does show as a disk drive but Windows XP...

If you have another hd you can install linux and recover most of your data
files, or as first reply saidd, Knoppix from a cd.

Virus program won't help?

I was going to suggest that and PcInspector. These will not run on a floppy
though. If ZinZan can use another computer to place them on a CD maybe they can
be run from there? They do require an OS though.

Catch-22.

Unless the boot drive is exchanged with one that has a working version of
Windows there is no way to run the above programs to save the data.

They discuss an Ultimate Boot CD for Win here:

I have a harddrive with "EZdrive" overlay (old 486 cannot see >500mb) and split
into two partitions (DOS & Deli Linux). The DOS patition was corrupted and I could
not boot the computer. Testdisk fixed the problem. I could boot the system and
access all the files.

The DOS version(included in the above file) is under 22KB! and can be run from a
floppy. Try it. You might find it useful. I am going to keep it around always :-)

Thanks Gabriele.

The DOs files (two of them) take up just about 220 kb. Not 22KB as mentioned .
Sorry..
