Corrupted Hard Drive/Windows

Hi

I installed some digital camera software recently on my computer and I ran into a whole lot of trouble

The software was for the Sony DSC-F828 Digital Still Camera. I'm not sure exactly if these drivers/programs were at fault, but that's when my problems started. While I was transferring some pictures onto my hard drive, windows kept telling me some key windows files had been replaced with unrecognized versions. It asked to insert the Windows XP CD so it could put the original files back. I tried, but it wouldn't put them back and the messages would just keep popping up no matter what I did

Eventually, I noticed all the icons but the basic ones (My Computer, My Documents, etc) disappeared off the desktop. The quick launch toolbar was empty, and so was the Start > Programs menu

I decided to reboot, and upon doing that I got a message saying

NTLDR is missin
Press any key to reboo

This was before windows loaded, still during boot

Pressing any key would result in

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTE

I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I'm trying to fix the problem. I'm trying to avoid having to do a format and losing all my files, but I'm afraid all the files might already be gone. I popped in another hard drive with a windows installation and looked at the files left on the corrupted hard drive. Everything under C:\Documents and Setting\Username was pretty much gone, only a few basics left. Outlook express e-mails, desktop files, custom folders, all gone

I try using fixboot, but that didn't change a thing. I'd like to try using the system restore feature, but I'm not sure how to proceed when I can't logon into windows. Trying to get to the screen where I can choose between Safe Mode, Normal mode, etc doesn't seem to be working, I just get to the NTLDR is missing message

Any help would be appreciated on how to proceed with a system restore, if at all possible. Or if you may have any other ideas on how to fix this, I'd be grateful

I was running Windows XP with SP1 installed on this machine

Thanks

Jan

It would appear from my limited knowledge that your >boot.ini< file is
corrupted.
This can be fixed by running the >bootcfg< from the repair console on the XP
CD.
If you have ran >fixboot< I'm not too sure if it's too late.
Anyway if >bootcfg< with the repair switch doesn't work I think a repair or
re-install is the only quick answer.
Anyone have a better suggestion :-)
