My daughter has some data on a floppy disk which has
somehow been corrupted. Windows XP will not open the
disk, gives an error message that it has not been
FORMATED, and asks if I would like to it format it.
Reading the disk with Norton anti-virus program does not
help, since it finds no files. Any way to repair this
problem? Thanks, D_J

I'm having a similar problem with all removable media - CD, DVD, Flash USB
drives, floppies. Can you read a CD?

There are severla programs that can read bad floppies or other removeable
media, or ven bad hard drives.

One of my favorites is PC Inspector File Recovery, free from:

However, I have heard of cases where a new PC can't read the floppy form an
old PC, and that may be due to slightly different alignments of read/write
heads on the two floppy drives. Thus, it could be very useful to attempt
reading the floppy in third PC.

It's been noted many times that the driver for the floppy drive that comes
with XP is not very good - doesn't support all drives.

Trying to access the data from a Win9x machine, then email or network it to
the XP box is your best bet, in most cases.

For a discussion of the problem, and a possible solution (I've not tested
this yet, so don't blame me!<G>) see:

Out of the blue my external Maxtor 30 gig HD just stopped
being recognized, too. It asks if I want to format it (of
course I don't--I'll lose everything on it). I need the
documents on it. I'm wondering if somehow the relatively
new XP patches changed the recog. ability...
