Hi, experts,
I too -- like Jeff yesterday -- get the following message
on Windows XP home edition when I put a disk into my
Toshiba DVD-ROM drive. I've read various help screens &
troubleshooters; downloaded all the suggested updates for
drives & looked at the device manager data, & everything
appears OK as far as I can tell.

"Disk is not formatted. Windows cannot read from this
disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a
format that is not compatible with Windows."
What's happening?

My DVD drive sounds like it's laboring -- almost like a
washing machine trying to start the wring cycle but not
revolving fast enough.
Please help!

Thank you,
Gail

The fact that your drive is making some new (and bad) sounds may be an
indication that there is a hardware fault - check with Toshiba.

(Also, just to be safe, be sure to test your disc with other drives to make
sure it isn't an issue with the disc.)

I am geting the same problem with my LG DVD-ROM drive.
I can get DVD movies to play but I can not access my MSDN subscription
DVDs.
No matter what I try to do, it will not read DVD data.
CD-R is OK.
DVD movies are OK (retail or DVD-R).
If a DVD with data is inserted, it spins up twice and then nothing.
Further clicks on the drive in Windows Explorer returns "please insert
a disk in drive...". Trying to populate the volume in Device
Properties returns a status of "No Media".

I tried EVERYTHING.
All the registry fixes (UpperFilters and LowerFilters have been
removed) mentionned here, the deleting of devices, and a Repair of
Windows XP.

I was going nuts because this has worked before.
I've used my MSDN subscription disks on this drive and computer
before.
Suspecting the hardware, I removed the drive and installed it on my
second computer that is running Windows 98 SE. NO PROBLEMS! The disk
read perfectly. I even transfered some files over from it to my
computer using the LAN.

I'm down to a full wipe of Windows and a re-install.
I really don't want to do this.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Carlos
