Most but not all of the images I have saved to my hard drive in the last few
months have become corrupted and not viewable. I saved 90% of them in jpg
format. Photos I saved a year ago are fine. I even downloaded a free to try
photo recovery program and it was unable to save them. Any ideas on what is
causing this?

Hard drive problems cause this. You did save them to CDs or DVDs, didn't
you?

Yes, I did Jim. I had a hard drive crash some time ago and learned my lesson.
Can I prevent this or do I need a new hard drive?

No, you can't prevent hardware problems. That is why people should always
have important data saved to CD or DVD.

As for the disk, perhaps it is on its way to the trashbin. However, before
taking such a drastic step, run Scandisk in the full mode. That one makes a
much more thorough check of the disk. You might have a better picture of
the disk after that.

Jim,
I ran the scandisk per your instructions last night and it found no problems
on the hard drive.
