Corrupted CD ROM Driver

I deleted some unused programs, defraged my c drive and
now the computer doesn't recognize the CD Rom. Code 39
message says "Windows cannot load driver for this device,
it is corrupt or missing." Uninstalling and trying to
reinstall driver won't work. Computer says it found new
hardware, verifies it, but does not call for disk to be
loaded to reinstall driver. Microsoft article 314060 says
I have to modify the registry. Is that my only option?

you could do a system restore
to a date prior to the problem

Check the system bios to see if it is showing up there. Windows cannot
load something the bios doesn't report as being on line.
How the bios could be changed by a defrag is hard to say, but not
impossible.
