Corrupted CD drivers

Wondering if anyone can help me. My CD and DVD drives
have vanished. In the device manager, both drives have an
exclamation logo next to them - device status- Missing or
corrupt file error 39. However they are present in BIOS
and in fully working order otherwise. Have tried system
restore which it wont allow me to do and I have unplugged
the drives from the motherboard, re-booted without them
and then re-booted with them re-connected - same
problem. Will re-installing XP make me lose any data?
