Hi Jen,
I ran into a similar problem when I wanted to run 'sfc /scannow'. I ended up making a CD from the i386 directory (I even
slipstreamed it so that it included SP1). I don't remember the site (didn't bookmark it). If you know someone that is running
WinXP, you could do a Google search on create WinXP boot disk and make your own. Being paranoid, I made the disk before I
actually needed it.
I find it annoying that on the low & medium priced machines like my HP Pavilion zt1130 they only give you recovery disk. On my
new HP Pavilion zd7010us they actually included a WinXP disk. In defense of the computer industry and (surprisingly Microsoft),
a discount on the Windows license is not the only reason why a lot of companies do recovery disks. There are a lot of users out
there who ONLY know how to push the power button and click on IE/Netscape/Mozilla. This of course is bad for those users who are
computer savvy, but makes it easy for service centers that are trying to help a person get their machine up and running. As an
aside, I hate how often the response here is to do a clean install when faced with a problem. I have had my zt1130 for almost 2
years and the the only time I used the recovery disk was when I upgraded hard disks. If you don't solve the problem, then it
will come back to bite you as you reinstall the software or hardware that led up to the original problem.
I normally buy in the mid-price range since I upgrade computers so often, but after ogling this laptop for a couple of months (I
go to CompUSA on much to frequent a basis) I figured what the heck (I had some bonus money from a client that I hadn't spent
yet). Who knows, I may keep this one for a while. Crucial has the 1GB DDR RAM SoDIMMS for $525, so I will spring for two this
week. As to the hard disk (I already have less than 14GB on a 60GB drive), I am waiting for the new 120GB 5400rpm drive to be
released by Toshiba. Everything else is actually more than I currently need.
Ciao . . .
C.Joseph
