Corrupt System Volume Information folder on each drive

Dear all,
My system Volume Information folders are all corrupt. I
get an access denied error whenever I try to access them.
This also seems to be causing Windows to pause for several
minutes on boot, during which time nothing responds.

I have enabled hidden files and system files via Tools /
Folder Options to no avail. Norton Disk Doctor does not
report any errors.

Any ideas?
