Whenever I do an online update of a realtime stock market data
software and install the update, I get an Win2K systems error message
that says I have a corrupted systems file. My computer seems to run
fine so I've ignored it because the message wasn't specific enough to
say what the problem was.
While looking through the Event Viewer I found more info on this
cryptic error message. The warnings were listed as "Windows File
Protection", Event ID: 64005. The description says:
"The protected system file mfc40u.dll was not restored
to its original, valid version because the Windows File
Protection restoration process was cancelled by user
interaction, user name is [my name]. The file version
of the bad file is 4.1.0.6140."
I checked my system and there are two copies of mfc40u.dll, in
Win2000/system32 and in Win2000\system32\ddlcache. The copy in the
system32 directory is dated 4/29/1999. The one in the dllcache is
dated 12/07/99.
Both files are the same size. I opened a CMD window and ran the DOS
command "COMP" and checked the two files against each other and there
are multiple bit error differences between them. So I assume one is
fine and one is corrupt. I might also assume the one in the dllcache
is no good and replace it with the one from the system32 folder, but
then I'd just be guessing. Maybe the newer file is from a Service Pack
update? I don't know.
If anyone knows how to resolve this problem, I'd appreciate the help.
