Corrupt Registry Key

I am trying to install IE7 but it keeps failing because of an error with the
"mailto" key in the registry. RegEdit shows the key but doesn't allow me to
do anything to it. Is there anyway to fix this key so I can update?

Hi,

Open a Run command and type in:
regedit click [OK] locate these two Keys and edit the permissions to give
yourself a full control on them:
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_ROOT\mailto

[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto

Right click the "mailto" and select Permissions from the List and see which
assigned there to your account or change to have full control on that Key!.

Error message when you try to install Internet Explorer 7: "Internet

I should have mentioned that I already tried changing the permissions. The
problem is that the key is *corrupt* and regedit does not allow me to do
anything to it - even clicking on it gives me an "Error while opening key"
message.

Any other ideas?

Did you tried the changes in safe Mode?.
Also did you logged as admin to accomplish this procedure?.

Make sure there is no security software running in RealTime Mode that
blocking you from editing the Registry as a security measure to protect your
system.

Turn the Realtime protection Off for this Step and the installation of IE7
then you can Turn them ON back again after a success of the IE7 installation.

Make sure the machine is malware free and virus free by running a scan from
an up2date security software and anti-malware programs.

Randy,

You may have to take ownership of that key, and then assign Permissions. For more information, see section "Changing Ownership of a Registry Key" in this article:
