Hello everyone,

Today I tried to reinstal my Windows XP Professional onto my laptop. I
noticed that the recovery partition is corrupted. Is it legal for me to
install Windows XP Professional from the CD that my friend has got and after
the installation is complete change the product key to my own product key?

I really hope that you can help me. I can't get a new recovery CD-rom
without paying for it so if this would be legal then please tell me. If it is
not legal then please say so too so that I know.

yours,

Bernhard

When it is not the exact same version, is there a way to make this legal?
Also, when I update my windows machine, isn't it so that the version number
changes with each (major) update?

Bernhard

The XP Pro that came with your laptop is likely OEM, in order for you to
remain "legal", you would need to use an OEM XP Pro CD to reinstall using
the product key on the COA on the bottom of the laptop, if your friends
media is the retail version, your key will not work.

Any other version be it retail or OEM will not work. It has to be the same version and SP if any with it
