Hi all..here is my problem. Lately when I start my
computer up I get the following messages in no particular
order:
- ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt...
- adpi.sys is missing or corrupt...
- PAGE FAULT OCCURED IN NON-PAGED AREA..

It will then go on to tell me to choose "r" to repair
from my installation CD. I did that. Then i ran
chkdsk /r/f, and the scan command that checks all windows
protected files (scan-sfc?). These showed no corrupted
disk space on the HD and all files were in place. My
machine would boot up ok at random and then all of the
sudden shut down, sometimes after more than an hour of
running fine. Sometimes I got the blue screen of death
with 1 of the 3 above messages, and other times i just
got the repair message.
After pulling my hair out and much nashing of teeth, i
decided to do a complete re-install of windows XP, from
scatch, from my XP CD. Everything seems to be going fine
as i re-install all the latest drivers and 3rd party
software, ie norton etc. I then go to windows update,
and of course have 46 critical updates to perform. I de-
select SP1 as it has to be installed alone, install the
other 45 and then download and install SP1.......AND
START GETTING THE SAME PROBLEMS I HAD BEFORE...RANDOM
SHUTDOWNS AND THE SAME 3 ERROR MESSAGES???? WHAT GIVES?

Any help would be much appreciated...scott

Which version of Windows XP are you running?

Are you choosing not to use SP1 or SP1(a) because of the size of the
download, or out of personal choice?

Have you booted from the CD-ROM and chosen to repair the current
installation of Windows XP (rather than doing a clean install)? This
option comes up when you boot from the Windows XP installation CD-ROM
(after the loading of all the drivers and after you have selected to
install Windows XP).
