Ive recently had a few corrupt mp3 files in my presentation. I
redownloaded the mp3's and put them back to the same folder that the
original ones were in. Is there a way of relinking these in the
presentation? Or do I have to just delete the original sound and readd
the sound file from scratch inside the presentation.

Thx

If the files are in the original folder you inserted them from into PPT and
have the same names, they're already relinked.

I dont think thats true..as I ran pptools to see what links are bad
and recreated the exact name of the mp3 files and folders that it said
had bad links. The presentation plays fine but I run into the cannot
find file link problem when I do pack and go. Im wondering if the
fact that I redownloaded the mp3 which may be a diff file size is the
problem. The name is exact as before tho.

Ah, but you've added another step with pack and go (and presumably moving the
PPT file and MP3s to a different computer). That may have soured the deal.

If the link is to c:\somefolder\on\your\hdd\sound.mp3 and you move the PPT to
some other system that doesn't have that exact folder structure with sound.mp3
in it, the links will break.

As long as PPT can find sound.mp3 (no matter what other mp3 file's been copied
atop it) it should work.

Try running fixlinks on the presentation after you've unpacked it to the other
computer.

To be honest I havent ordered fixlinks or tired it other than the
demo. But my presentation has never been on another computer.
Originallly the presentation was on another drive that had gone bad. I
was able to extract the ppt file along with most of the drive. I had
the mo3's in two diff folders. Upon recreating the folder structure
one of the folders was bad along with the mp3's in it and the other
was fine. So i redownloaded the mp3's that were corrupt and reinserted
them in the presentation and created the exact folder structure that
fixlinks reported. Now the presentation plays ok, however, when I want
to pack and go it so I can give it to a cousin, I get the "file cant
be found" with the path to where my original folder was corrupt. This
is even after I recreated the folder and the file name of the mp3's
per to what fixlink reported.

thx for your attempts so far Steve. :)

My Bad! I didn't mean to suggest that you purchase it, just to run a report on
the presentation.

But my presentation has never been on another computer.

Your cousin's comptuter in this case. I'm interested to see what the fixlinks
report says about the presentation after it's been through Pack and Go and
re-installed there. I realize this may not be practical but if possible we might
learn something.

Hm. It gets more and more complex. <g>
I wonder if PPT's retained some corrupted data.

What happens if you delete one or two of the MP3s entirely, re-insert them and
then Pack, Go and Gone to Cousins with it?
thx for your attempts so far Steve. :)

never have had a chance to pack it to my cousins computer yet since
pack and go reminds me that it cant find the reinserted and original
corrupt files
Here is what fixlinks reports:

I had two folders that the mp3's were in. The july 20th-3ms was the
one that was corrupt. I simply deleted those mp3's from my
presentation and reinserted them with newly downloaded ones in the
zoom folder. (Dont mention the folder names heheh, when i saved them i
was too lazy to create pertinent names lol.) The presentation then
played fine after I reinserted. When I did my pack and go I got the
message that it could find the files from the july20th folder. So I
recreated the july 20th exactly how fixlinks reported it and dumped
the mp3's into there as well. They are now in both folders. I dont
understand why I cant now run the pack and go and for powerpoint to
now see them, otherthan the fact that the mp3's may be a different
file size than what the original ones were. I didnt think PP would
care about this other than the exact name and location. You can see by
the report that the relinked ones in the zoom folder are ok and that
is all I care about. But running the pack and go still reports the
missing ones from the july20th folder and errors out on me, thus not
giving me the ppz file and such to burn to cd.

that surely is starting to look like it. I even uninstalled office and
reinstalled but still same.

Yup, see above

indeed thx again

When you re-inserted the new files, did you delete the old ones? It looks as though
you may not have.

Try this: use the FixLinks GoTo tool (the footsteps icon).
For each of the BAD links, plug in the slide number and the name of the shape (ie,
Picture 5) and go to that shape; delete it.

Then give it another shot.

Thanks for all the detail, btw. It's great!
