Get the message when booting that

\windows\system32\config\system is corrupt or missing
and that I should use original WinXP CD and press R
at first screen to enter recovery console

Now I have a raid setup so I have to load my Raid drivers first
and after I do this I then press R when the option appears. It takes
me to the recovery console which is a dos like screen with
C:\

Now if I do a dir nothing shows for C:\ and if I do a dir for
D:\ it shows about 10 files and I cant get the file I want. Now
I have files that I need and dont want to lose so a fresh install
on Windows is not on the cards.

btw: I have tried using the copy command ( similar to dos ???)
to copy the file but get the error message that source file not found
or something similar.

Try a boot into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 just before the "Starting
Windows" screen would appear (takes a bit of practice).
Choose LAST GOOD.

If that does nothing, use a working PC to read this first...

After your system is restored, the ERUNT utility available here may

If the problem persists, try swapping current RAM (even if it checks
good) for a single, high-quality 512Mb chip. XP reportedly is sensitive
to memory timing.

I'm having the exact same problem with a clients computer. Ran chkdsk also
but didn't do anything. I tried booting every possible way but it just get's
to one point and restarts. I'm pretty sure in my case it's a bad driver, but
repair will not let me do anything. Read on Microsoft's site that you need
to type your admin logon password when first get to the prompt. tried that
and also logon and the password but still can't see the c drive. I would
reformat the drive but he needs 2 important files off it that were not
backed up. Is your drive NTFS? or FAT32. Also try listsvc and see what comes
up. Please keep us posted. Thanks Jason

Probably nothing to do with your problem, but you might want to set the
correct time on your clock.

Problem is that after loading the Raid drivers I get this error
when I try to access ( ie. md temp ) "access is denied"

If I do a dir I get this message "an error occurred during
directory enumeration"

btw: to both, thanks for your help

Very strange but you may understand. For some reason after
not been able to access C' properly I typed chkdsk in the recover console
and it ran but showed no errors but after that I was able to use the dir
command and see my C: drive but still the md temp command wouldn't work.

Now I then thought I would try a reboot and WinXP started and ran the chkdsk
command and said it was fixing errors etc and then it automatically rebooted
and I now have WinXP running.

Why I am not the smartest person when it comes to computers I am not a
blonde
either.

And to top the whole thing off I got a corrupted file on this computer (
message appeared
advising to run chkdsk ) and when I rebooted it ran chkdsk and fixed the
error.

Anyway thanks for your help and I am now going to bash my head
against a brick wall to make myself feel better ( of course after I back all
my important files up )

Once again....thx

Not sure. I thought if you formatted NTFS it makes it almost impossible to
view the data from another computer unless you have permission too. Can
anybody help out with this one? If I put it in as a slave drive on another
computer will I see the data?

Everything is working ok.

Maybe this may help, but couldnt you put the drive in another computer
and then get the files

Yes, I have just built a new computer and had a 20 gig NTFS drive
laying around so I put it in to get some MP 3's from .
