Corrupt Excel 97 File

My wife has a file that has become corrupted and can no longer open it. I
did a Google search and found several programs or services that will do the
trick. I downloaded a demo of Excelfix and it worked like a charm. However,
89.00USD is a little too steep for fixing one small file. (I am sure lots of
people would and have paid more than 89.00 and think it is a bargain.)

Are there any other options? I searched the MS Knowledgebase and found
information that might help if I could open the file, but it will not open.
I get an error that reads " The file may be read only...or I may be trying
to access a read-only location, etc...or the Server may not be
responding...)

The file is on a floppy.

Thanks for any help.

First of all, never open a file directly from a floppy -- you're
asking for trouble. Instead, copy the file from the floppy to the
hard drive, open it there, and then copy back to the floppy after
you've saved and closed the file.

Excel 2002 can often open corrupted file with little or no loss of
data/code/formatting. Similarly, OpenOffice (50MB download from
www.openoffice.org ) can often open corrupted files.

Thanks so much Chip. I had a copy of Office XP on my notebook, opened the
file upon which I received the same error but then Office XP recovered the
file. All data intact.

Much cheaper than $89.00, so how much do I owe you? <vbg>
