QUESTION: Can COM1 Device Driver corruption be caued by
plugging and unplugging HPDeskjet printer from the
parallel port while the printer and computer are both
powered ON? The computer was booted and running, the
printer was powered on, but no print jobs were in
progress, and no print jobs in any spool or queue.

computer

PROBLEM
I receive the following error message when attempting to
enter standby mode or hibernate mode.

STANDBY FAILED (or HIBERNATION FAILED)
Device driver for Com1 device is preventing machine from
entering standby. Please close all applications and try
again. If problem persists, you may need to update this
driver.

I did a complete shutdown but the problem persisted after
cold boot. I opened the Device Manager and re-installed
the same ECP Port and COM1 drivers which Windows located
on my hard drive. THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I am
considering Format C: and complete re-install of OS.

BACKGROUND
Just prior to the above error, I had a major problem with
my HP Deskjet printer, connected to the ECP Port on
Com1. From a single page document, it was printing
multiple pages of garbage characters. Re-booting seemed
to solve the printing problem.

Just prior to that printing "crash", an office mate
had "borrowed" the printer by un-plugging it from this
computer's parallel port and then re-connecting it to this
same computer after finishing their print job.
