I have a .dat file under "documents and settings/local
settings/temporary internet files/content.ie5 that has
expanded to over 8mb and has corrupted data inside. When
it resets my temp internet files there are errors. The
problem is that when I try to edit it out and clean up the
content I can't get it to open. I get an error mesasage
that says "Content locked for editing by another user."
I'm assuming it's a system file...so how do I acces it"?
I'm on a PC at home using cable access and Windows 2000
Pro. Can anyone assist with this so I can gain access to
the .dat file and correct the problem?

Please note that microsoft.public.access is a newsgroup for the
program Microsoft Access(TM), not for general computer support
questions!

But to answer - try opening your computer in Safe Mode (see "safe
mode" in the online help; usually it just involves holding down the
CTRL key as it's booting into Windows). This will stop any programs in
your startup from running, and you should be able to RENAME (don't
delete yet until you know that you can safely remove the file) this
..dat file.

And... if you don't have a good virus scanner, get one and use it.
This behavior very well could be the activity of a virus.
