I have a bunch these files in my C:\Windows location.(see
below) I've tried System repair from the installation disc
and Windows Update to fix them. It appears that they are
from the Service Packs that I downloaded. What
happened?
$C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB817778$
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB823559$
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB823559$\spuninst
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB839643-DirectX9$
kb839643-directX9
etc.
There are a ton of these in there. What are they and do
they need removing, fixing, or what?

These are not corrupt files, these are the uninstall information for various
updates, often referred to as "Hotfixes" in Add/Remove Programs in Control
Panel and should not be removed unless you feel you will never have to
remove such updates. Understand, that situation may arise. You may update
some drivers or application and your system might become unstable and you
may need to remove items one by one until you can find the culprit.

Obviously, you could uninstall the updated driver or application but the
ability to remove the updates, gives you additional options for diagnosing
the issue.

Michael,

Thank you very much!
