I just reinstalled EVERYTHING including windows and I remember that setting
up Outlook correctly was not readily apparent last time. If I just open the
pst files I will never get rid of the initial "Personal Folders" folder.

How do I do it right this time?

Open and copy the items over works fine.
With Outlook closed, you can delete your current PST file and then start
Outlook.
It should (or has in the past) complain it can't locate the Personal Folder
File. Direct it to your existing file.

After opening your old PST, set the delivery location to that PST and you'll
be back to normal. Just how is version-dependent and you didn't state your
Outlook version.

I followed the advice from BillR and now I've got the dreaded two Personal
Folders agian. Mail is going to both and neither can be closed because they
are "mail delivery folders." I've removed all of the email accounts using
tools>email accounts> view or change... and still I am just not allowed to
remove those stupid folders from the tree. Not from File>data file
management, and not from the context menu.

I will now go and delete the profile and try agian. But how exactly?
This is ver. 2003

Then I suspect you didn't follow Bill's advice exactly, since nothing he
said would have caused what you see.

Create a new mail profile and BEFORE STARTING OUTLOOK point that profile at
your existing PST with the Data Files button in the Mail applet.

Thanks, that worked.

I think one of the issues leading to this problem is that if you first
associate a passport account with the OS (or maybe any http mail) then
Outlook still needs to create the personal folders. Subsequent POP3 accounts
then always result in additional personal folders on the tree view. Another
issue is in the accounts management dialogue. The drop down list for
selecting the mail delivery folder should more precisely identify which
"personal folders" one is pointing at perhaps by showing the size and or date
created. I think outlook should also direct users to the mail applet or at
least suggest its critical role in the setup process when it is first run.
Thats my $0.02.

Thanks agian guys.

HTTP accounts (like Hotmail) will always have their own folder set. It's
the nature of HTTP accounts.
