Hi,
I just reformatted my hard drive and thought I'd play around with the IDE
channels. I'm running a 60GB hard drive, a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW on an Abit
kr7a-raid. The Cd-Rw was slaved to the dvd-rom and I put these on separate
channels and I put the hard drive on another, but the cd-rw was not
detected and I got problems with the hard drive. I put it all back to how
it was and it was ok. Can anyone suggest how it should be done on separate
channels and which should be set to slave/master.

It probably wasn't detected because you forgot to set the jumper on the
drive to slave. I'm not sure that cable select works on ATAPI drives, as I
always set them to the correct master/slave position. I do know that cable
select won't work on 40 wire cables, though. It requires the use of 80 wire
cables.

If each drive was alone on the separate channels: both should have been
jumpered as Master.

Correct. I mistakenly said slave... To long a day at work today... lol

Have you loaded the correct highpoint drivers for your bios version ?

DVD as master on IDE 1, CD-RW as master on IDE 2.
Hard drive as master on the raid controller (IDE 3) , set bios to boot from
raid controller.

The newer cables (ATA66-100-133) require the master device be on the
connecter on the end of the ribbon cable, not the middle one
Also double check the jumpers, (make sure the CD-RW is set to master)

Ditto..

How interesting. I have never had a functionality or speed problem
regardless of the physical position of the master of a pair of ATA-100
disks on dual-connector ATA-100/80-wire cables. Of course, I NEVER
use cable-select either.

Also, I always load my DVD/CD drives on Parallel-IDE2, and never ever
combine Atapi-devices with a Hard-disk on the same IDE port. Have dual
DVD-burners as Master/Slave on IDE-2 right now (IC7-G). Again no
problem with functionality or read/write speed.
