Correct terminology

I have a problem with XP SP2 and I don't know the proper terms to use to
describe the problem.

What happens is that on the hour XP switches from whatever program is
running, and that I am working in if there are more than one, to the desktop.
While in almost all instances it's harmless it is annoying.

What technical terms do I use? Or better yet, what do I do to correct the
problem?

Thanks in advance

Do you have a program running that displays a message on-the-hour? If
so, disable it, or change its preferences to only sound off, not
changing focus to its display. Also see this:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 66. (r-h column) Prevent Programs from Stealing Focus

Nothing in background that is set to run on the hour. No messages come up,
just the desktop.

Thanks,

Sorry, I can answer only the first question with any certainty. :-(
The technical term is "focus". The active application loses focus.

Now, as to what's causing it. If it's in the hour, every hour, that
strongly suggests you have some scheduled program that kicks off at
that time, grabs focus, and closes itself, leaving focus on the
desktop.

The best thing would be to figure out which application that is. Odds
are you don't actually need it, at least not on that schedule. Or
perhaps you can tweak its settings.

Failing that, you might try TweakUI's setting "prevent applications
from stealing focus", under General. I found that it works for some
applications but not others.
